Water Level Monitoring in Tanks and Reservoirs

Municipal water utilities and industrial facilities use the MRD-Series to monitor water levels in storage tanks, reservoirs, and clearwells without contact probes that corrode or foul over time. The 80 GHz radar reads accurately through condensation and humidity that forms above warm water surfaces, delivering reliable level data in conditions that defeat ultrasonic sensors.

  • Eliminate manual dipstick checks across distributed tank infrastructure
  • Receive automated alerts when levels drop below refill thresholds or approach overflow
  • Track historical fill patterns to optimize pumping schedules and reduce energy costs
  • Monitor sewer flow levels in real time to detect blockages and overflow risks before they become emergencies
  • Deploy across stormwater retention basins with solar-powered models for maintenance-free operation
  • Integrate level alerts with municipal SCADA systems for automated pump control

Sewer and Stormwater Management

Sewer systems present some of the most challenging conditions for distance sensors: high humidity, condensation, corrosive gases, and unpredictable flow surges. The MRD-12 and MRD-25 models measure water distance in manholes, wet wells, and stormwater basins where ultrasonic sensors produce erratic readings due to moisture interference.

Smart Agriculture and Irrigation Management

Precision agriculture demands reliable water management data. The MRD-Series monitors irrigation reservoir levels, water tank fill status, and canal water heights across sprawling farm operations. Paired with ioX-Connect soil moisture sensors, facilities managers gain a complete picture of water supply and demand.

  • Monitor irrigation reservoir levels remotely across thousands of acres
  • Automate tank refill triggers when water drops below irrigation thresholds
  • Combine distance data with soil moisture readings for precision water allocation
  • Provide real-time parking availability data to drivers, reducing circling time and congestion
  • Monitor loading dock occupancy to optimize delivery scheduling and throughput
  • Track fleet vehicle presence in yards to verify dispatch status and asset utilization
  • Optimize collection routes by servicing only bins that have reached fill thresholds, reducing fuel costs by up to 30%
  • Prevent overflow and associated fines by triggering alerts when compactors approach capacity
  • Track fill-rate patterns to right-size containers and adjust collection frequency by season

Parking and Vehicle Detection

The MRD-03 short-range model detects vehicle presence in parking structures, loading docks, and fleet yards. The narrow 7.6° beam angle ensures each sensor monitors a single parking space without cross-talk from adjacent spots, enabling accurate occupancy counts in covered and outdoor facilities.

Waste Management and Fill-Level Sensing

Waste haulers and facility managers deploy the MRD-Series inside dumpsters, compactors, and waste bins to monitor fill levels remotely. The radar penetrates dust and debris that block optical sensors, delivering accurate fill percentages that enable route optimization and prevent overflows.

The three models differ in maximum measurement range. The MRD-03 measures from 200 mm to 3,000 mm (7.9 in to 9.8 ft), the MRD-12 from 200 mm to 12,000 mm (7.9 in to 39.4 ft), and the MRD-25 from 200 mm to 25,000 mm (7.9 in to 82.0 ft). All three share the same 80 GHz radar technology, ±20 mm accuracy, and 1 mm resolution. Choose the model that matches your application’s maximum distance requirement.

Ultrasonic sensors rely on sound waves that are disrupted by condensation, dust, moisture, and temperature changes. The MRD-Series uses 80 GHz microwave radar, which penetrates these obstructions and even solid materials like wood and plastic. This makes it far more reliable in harsh environments such as sewer manholes, chemical tanks, and outdoor installations where ultrasonic sensors produce inaccurate or erratic readings.
The MRD-Series offers four power configurations: 8,500 mAh non-rechargeable, 19,000 mAh non-rechargeable (for maximum lifespan), 1,000 mAh rechargeable Li-ion, and 3,000 mAh with a 0.9 W solar panel for maintenance-free operation. Battery life depends on your reporting interval and environmental conditions. Contact ioX-Connect for estimated life calculations based on your specific deployment parameters.

The 80 GHz radar can penetrate certain non-metallic materials such as plastic and wood, so in some configurations it can measure through a tank lid made of these materials. However, metal enclosures will block the radar signal. For closed metal tanks, the sensor should be mounted inside the tank above the liquid surface, looking downward. Contact our team for application-specific guidance.

The MRD-Series supports BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) configuration. Use a smartphone or tablet to connect wirelessly and adjust parameters such as measurement interval, alert thresholds, and LoRaWAN settings. Firmware updates are delivered wirelessly via OTA (Over-The-Air), so you never need to physically connect to the sensor for software updates.

Yes. In addition to LoRaWAN, the MRD-Series is available in NB-IoT, LTE-M, and LTE CAT-1 variants for deployments where LoRaWAN gateway infrastructure is not available. Cellular models connect directly to mobile networks, eliminating the need for a local gateway. Contact sales@iox-connect.com for cellular model availability and pricing.
The beam angle describes how wide the radar signal spreads as it travels from the sensor to the target surface. At 7.6°, the MRD-Series has a very narrow, focused beam. This means it can measure distance accurately in confined spaces like narrow tanks or pipes without interference from sidewalls. A wider beam angle would pick up echoes from surrounding surfaces, reducing accuracy.

LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) is a low-power wireless protocol designed for IoT devices. It enables sensors to transmit small data packets over long distances (up to 10 km / 6 miles in open terrain) while consuming very little energy. LoRaWAN operates in unlicensed ISM bands (915 MHz in the US), which means no recurring cellular data fees for your sensor network.

LoRaWAN sensors typically achieve 2–5 km (1.2–3 miles) in urban environments with buildings and obstructions, and up to 10 km (6 miles) or more in open, rural areas. Actual range depends on antenna height, terrain, building density, and environmental conditions. ioX-Connect gateways are designed to maximize coverage for your specific deployment scenario.

LoRaWAN uses AES-128 encryption at two levels: a network session key that secures communication between the sensor and the network server, and an application session key that encrypts the actual data payload end-to-end. This dual-layer encryption ensures your distance measurement data is protected from interception and tampering throughout the entire transmission chain.
