How It Works & Benefits of Using ioX Differential Air Pressure Sensors
Understanding the Mechanics:
The ioX Wireless Differential Pressure Sensors are engineered to precisely measure the pressure difference between two input ports. By monitoring the differential pressure, these sensors provide vital data on the status and efficiency of HVAC systems, clean rooms, and other critical environments.
Each sensor reads the air pressure from two separate ports—designating one as the positive or high-pressure side and the other as the negative or low-pressure side. Depending on the relative pressures, the sensors generate a positive or negative reading. This measurement is crucial for detecting anomalies like clogged filters or system leaks that can impact overall system performance.
Operational Insights:
The data collected is sent at regular intervals, known as Heartbeats, to a gateway that relays information to the ioX-Connect platform. This platform allows for real-time monitoring and analysis, enabling facility managers to make informed decisions swiftly.
Application Specifics:
Whether it’s ensuring that a hospital’s isolation rooms maintain negative pressure to contain infectious particles or monitoring air filters in manufacturing facilities to prevent product contamination, ioX Wireless Differential Pressure Sensors are an indispensable tool for critical monitoring and management.
Enhanced System Efficiency
By continuously monitoring differential pressure, these sensors ensure that HVAC systems and other air management setups operate at optimal efficiency, conserving energy and reducing operational costs.
Proactive Maintenance

A differential pressure sensor measures the difference in air pressure between two points, typically across system components like filters or fans within HVAC systems. These sensors are crucial for monitoring and ensuring that air systems operate efficiently and effectively. They help in maintaining optimal pressure levels, crucial for system health and energy efficiency.
Differential air pressure is the difference in air pressure between two distinct spaces or across a barrier such as an air filter in HVAC systems. It is a critical parameter in environments where maintaining specific air pressure is necessary for safety, comfort, or process requirements, such as in clean rooms, hospitals, and manufacturing facilities.
The primary function of monitoring differential pressure is to ensure that air flows properly through systems and that filters or other components are functioning correctly. In HVAC systems, for example, it helps detect clogged filters or system leaks which can affect overall efficiency and air quality. This monitoring is essential for system maintenance, energy conservation, and ensuring a healthy environment.
An air pressure sensor detects and measures the pressure of air within a particular environment or system. These sensors are vital for various applications, including HVAC system regulation, altitude measurement in aviation, and meteorological observations. They provide data necessary for controlling and optimizing operations where air pressure is a critical factor.
A differential pressure sensor works by measuring the pressure difference between two input ports. When air or gas enters the sensor, it detects the pressures and calculates the differential value. This measurement is often used to assess airflow, filter resistance, and system functionality. The sensor typically uses a piezoresistive, capacitive, or thermal sensing element to accurately gauge these differences and provide outputs for monitoring and control purposes.
Differential pressure sensors offer several advantages:
- Precision Monitoring: They provide accurate readings of pressure differences, essential for systems like HVAC where precise control is needed.
- System Efficiency: By identifying pressure discrepancies, these sensors help maintain system efficiency, reducing energy consumption and operational costs.
- Predictive Maintenance: They enable proactive maintenance practices by signaling when system components, such as filters, need servicing.
- Enhanced Safety: In critical environments, such as hospitals, they ensure that proper air pressure levels are maintained to prevent contamination.
ioX-Connect's Wireless Sensor communication can reach 1,200+ feet through 12+ walls non-line-of-sight.
You can connect up to 50 different ioX Wireless Sensors to 1 gateway. Gateways can also serve as range extenders if you have a big site where sensors will be installed more than 1,000 ft apart.
The life span of the battery is dependent on several factors, including:
- How frequently does the sensor transmit data (Heartbeat)
- How far the sensor is from the wireless gateway
- The obstructions that can cause difficulty in sending data (farther distance and obstructions require that the radio operate at longer intervals to send and receive data)
ioX-Connect Sensors and Gateways provide automated data logging. Our sensors can store up to 4,000 messages if the gateway connection is lost (non-volatile flash, persists through the power cycle). For 10-minute Heartbeat settings, this accounts for approximately 22 days of messages or readings. For 2-hour Heartbeat settings, our sensors can log up to 266 days of readings.
Plus, our gateways can save up to 50,000 sensor messages if its connection is lost. Our sensors and gateways can log all this data before sending it to the ioX-Connect platform—our sensor management and monitoring software—for cloud storage, trending, and analysis.
ioX-Connect wireless products use Encrypt-RF bank-level security, featuring a 256-bit exchange to establish a globally unique key and an AES-128 CTR for all data messages. Security is maintained at all communication points from sensor to gateway, gateway to software, and back again.
ioX-Connect's standard wireless products use several features to help protect sensor data in transit. The proprietary sensor protocol uses very low transmit power and requires specialized radio equipment to operate. Typical wireless devices that run on non-proprietary communication protocols (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee) operate using different frequency bands, so you can't use them to eavesdrop on the radio communications from the ioX-Connect family of sensors. In addition, we use a robust packet tampering evaluation routine to ensure that traffic isn't altered between the sensors and the gateways. This enables us to check for well-formed data packets that only originate from ioX-Connect enabled devices. We have algorithms that protect against spoofing and re-transmission of wireless data packets to safeguard data further.
Absolutely! This is what sets ioX-Connect apart from all other IoT solutions out there. ioX-Connect's Analytics module allows you to combine data from different sources not just sensors to create cross functional reports, analyze and trend sensor data, interact with your historical data and collaborate across departments thereby giving you more insights into your business/operations.
Yes. The ioX-Connect platform can be fed with data from external sensors provided we can retrieve the external sensor data through some service like an API. Please reach out to us at: sales@iox-connect.com for more detail on integration capabilities.
